Eiffel Tower Batobus stop
The
Eiffel Tower is the lighthouse of Paris. For travellers
from all over the world, even those who have never seen it, it is the
undisputed symbol of the city. The iron lady, born in 1889 for the World's
Fair, commemorates the centennial of the French Revolution.
From the Chaillot,
or Trocadéro Palace across the river, built for the 1937
World's Fair, Gustave Eiffel's creation can be seen
in all its majesty. At the foot of the tower, lies the Champ de Mars, formerly
a terrain for field manoevers for the
Military School. Today, it is a playground, a lover's
lane
and a marionette theatre. The days when Parmentier
experimented with growing potatoes here, the vegetable he popularized in France, are long gone! Although a bit
stilted by its image and its reputation, streets adjacent to the
Eiffel Tower, which everyone thinks they know so
well, still hold many secrets for those who keep their eyes open as they walk.
